It enjoyed the patronage of the great Vaishnavite Malla kings of Bishnupur which currently falls in the district of Bankura in West Bengal. The traditional Bishnupuri Baluchari used to have only dominant Krishna Leela themes weaved in a very rich natural silk fabric as an expression of their religious leaning. These days Bishnupuri Baluchari has introduced myriad other themes including depiction of tribal culture and heritage and other secular Alpana designs.
